Pittsburgh’s Most Tranquil Tea House

“The views were breathtaking. We admired fields filled with butterflies, took in the serene pond echoing with frog calls and chirping birds - all while wrapped under a blanket in the golden glow of the sunset.”

- Cliff & Brandi F.

“We make it a point to try every tea house we can find. We’ve never had an experience quite like this - immersive and whole-bodied. We can’t wait to come back.”

Our Origin

Inspiration for Selenite Tea House came during a September morning drive as our owner threaded along a narrow road in rural Pennsylvania. Horses pranced around their pastures; cows grazed against a hay bale backdrop. She was transported back to her travels abroad – biking through Ireland’s countryside, catching a train from Copenhagen to Stockholm and kayaking through Norwegian fjords.

These experiences embodied wellness as a core concept, and she decided Pittsburgh needed a place patrons could discover this same feeling - on repeat. She searched for the perfect space, and when she stepped onto the 18-acres our Victorian farmhouse sits upon, she knew it could be transformed.

The vision: A place where energy is protected, conversation is connective, and time moves slowly so you can focus your intention on every good thing you already have, and even more awaiting you.

At Selenite Tea House, olde world ambiance radiates from every corner. Guests describe a sense of tranquility washing over them from the moment they take their seats in our antique collection of cane and spindle-backed chairs. We incorporate Scandinavian lifestyle concepts of hygge and lagom throughout each touch at the tea house. Oh - and we welcome parents to bring their children. It’s the European way.

In addition to tea service Thursdays, Fridays and Sunday afternoons (other days possible for parties via special request) we provide a venue for weddings, baby and bridal showers, and private events for your most beloved celebrations. Whether it’s a corporate or wellness retreat, a birthday party, graduation or retirement event, Selenite is the spot.

With bonus rooms for out of town family to enjoy overnight stays and a relaxing hot tub, our venue is a perfect, central spot to bring your dream celebration to life.

View through an open wrought iron gate into a garden setting with a stone pathway, potted plants, lush green foliage, and outdoor seating area with tables and chairs, surrounded by string lights and tall trees in the background.

Selenite started as something we desired: a rural recharge, a moment of calm and peace. When you enter the curated frequency of our tea house, your mind & body resets.

We built this because we needed it.

Now, we share it with you.

Curated with Hygge in Mind

Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish lifestyle concept about taking time away from the daily rush to be together with people you care about - or even by yourself - to relax and enjoy life's quieter pleasures. In doing so, we can catch a glimpse into why the Nordic countries are rated among the happiest in the world.

In the Middle Ages, the Old Norse definition meant "protected from the outside world."

Hygge has no agenda. The point is to celebrate the small joys of life, perhaps discuss deeper topics. It is an opportunity to unwind and take things slow - something Selenite Tea House excels at.

Our tips for imbuing your life with hygge:

  1. Spend time with friends and family. Schedule a weekly get-together over coffee or brunch. Visit with older relatives.

  2. Remove work-life distractions. Leave work on time and leave work at the office. Turn off your cell phone and unplug once in a while. Take a day off for your mental health.

  3. Clear your home and clear your mind. Get rid of clutter with a jumpstart on spring cleaning. Create a simple space where you feel at peace. Add some simple decorations but give your space room to breathe.

  4. Practice mindfulness and meditation. Stress can build up with an unbalanced work-life, and taking time to defog yourself can help you feel more at ease in your own space. Turn off the lights and light an aromatic candle. Breathe and practice sitting in silence.

  5. Go outside for a walk and fresh air. The Danes have a saying: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.” Rain and cold weather rarely keep the Danes inside - our owner can personally attest to this.

  6. Eat, drink, and be hygge! On cold nights, curl up with a cup of tea or hot cocoa. Bake some cookies or cinnamon rolls. Light a fire or a candle, and exhale.
